March / Aquamarine
Aquamarine; the mere utterance of the word spontaneously summons oceanic imagery. Symbolically serene, life affirming, gentle, yet conversely powerful, aquamarine is the birthstone for the month of March.
“A March born shall always be
Soothed by Aqua, gem of sea
This mermaid’s treasured stone you wear
Will bring happiness, love, affection and care.”
Evoking both the purity of crystalline waters and the exhilaration of booming surf, aquamarines call to mind soothing, calming, cleansing thoughts. Believed to be the treasures of the mythical mermaid, aquamarines were worn by ancient mariners for protection on the high seas. Talismans for truth, faithfulness, courage and foresight, this blue member of the beryl family, is said to open the heart and promote improved communication. Derived from Latin and meaning sea water, these transparent gems are associated with the throat chakra. Wearing an aquamarine necklace or pendant is said to tap into the metaphysical properties of the stone and help the wearer to overcome any fear of speaking in public. By relaxing a speaker, and imbuing them with a sense of confidence, clarity and conviction, the aquamarine promotes articulate speech. Emitting a gentle and compassionate energy these gemstones are said to encourage stability, harmony and commitment.
Often recognized as possessing a feminine energy, not surprisingly, the aquamarine honors
Kuan –Yin, the beloved Chinese goddess of mercy, compassion and unconditional love. Kuan-Yin is traditionally seen as the protector of women, children and the less fortunate. Akna, the Mayan goddess of motherhood was also venerated with offerings of aquamarine.
In the practice of Feng Shui, aquamarines are aligned with the Water Energy. The Water Energy is one of “stillness, quiet strength and purification”. Embodying unrealized potentialities, the water energy is powerful yet yielding; it is an element of regeneration and rebirth. The motto for the aquamarine could very well be that not all power comes through force.
The light blue hue of the aquamarine embodies the talismanic qualities of that shade. Light blue is said to assist in developing patience, seeking forgiveness, curbing tempers, alleviating grief and reconciling disputes.
Perhaps the glass like lustre of the aquamarine does indeed help us see more than just the facets of the stone….
